Name:

As a 25+ year homeschooling vet, post-cancer, math prof, mother of five, master's track and field athlete, and certificated private pilot, I have a lot to share about what God has done in my life. In 2000 I began writing devotions as something to try when it seemed like accoustic pianists were becoming an endangered species at church. I have since found great blessings from writing and sharing. God is good.

The Image of God, Part 1

First published August 31, 2009

Genesis 1:27
And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.

When I was a kid my school teacher had a class activity for the students to commemorate George Washington’s birthday. Each child cut out a silhouette of George on black construction paper. We pasted the silhouette onto white paper for higher contrast. As an added bonus, each child was able to have a silhouette made of him. We each sat in a chair with a bright light shining at us. Our shadows shown on a light-weight sheet of paper. The teacher traced out our silhouette, and then we cut out the image and pasted it onto another white background.

The silhouettes, mine and George’s, have commonalities. They were images of the likeness of the subjects, and they would not give the full detail of what we looked like. But anyone of us could tell that George’s silhouette belonged to him. Even as young as we were, my classmates and I had seen his image on quarters and one dollar bills, but there were many things missing. Among others, the eye color, the bone structure, and age lines were not there.

Today’s verse is one of the great climaxes in Genesis 1. Placed at the beginning of the compilation of 66 books of the Bible, we see that God wants us to know he made man in his image. We should all feel very special by this fact. It is important for our spiritual focus to realize daily that we are from God the Father. Yes, we are tempted by sin, but one of our greatest spiritual energy boosters is to raise our head high as a child of God.

Try standing at a mirror and say pointing to your image, “Smile, you are made in God’s image!” Did you do it with conviction? Say it again! Now, say this to someone you meet today, and share the exhilaration of knowing just how special Man is!

O Wonderful Father Above, I am amazed at the marvelous creation around me. I feel so special in knowing that of all you made, I was created in your image. Thank you for this gift of life and help me to share your truth. I praise you in Jesus’ name, amen.
