A Study on Energy

Isaiah 40:31(NIV)
“…But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint."
In physics, potential energy is defined as stored energy or energy a body has while at rest. PE = (mass) x (gravitational acceleration) x (height of body above the ground). A motionless spring and a can of gasoline are examples of bodies having potential energy. It is available, but not used yet.
The idea known as kinetic energy is defined as the energy a body has due to its motion. KE = ½ (mass) x (velocity)2. Large heavy objects moving very fast like a meteor or roller coaster possess lots of kinetic energy.
Why the short physics lesson? I’ve been tired lately. Okay I know what you’re thinking. Am I getting plenty of rest? Am I getting plenty of exercise? Am I ill? Am I under stress? Probably not. Probably not. Probably not. Hey living is stressful! It’s my inner spirit whose flame seems to be fizzing to a flicker. Hey, you too?
I was writing a word problem for my math class when the physics connection hit me. The Bible does not talk about energy by means of equations, however, today’s verse refers to the proactive source that will provide us energy. When we focus our hope in the Lord, our strength, spirit, and zeal will be renewed. This is the stored up potential energy gained and increased by prayer and study.
The second portion of our verse identifies the amazing kinetic energy, the physical endurance, that we can have to continue. The metaphor “They will soar on wings like eagles” paints an ability above what we would be expected to do. Not only can we do it, we can do it beyond great!
Today, let’s meditate on this verse, building up our spiritual potential energy. Throughout the day praise the Lord as we experience kinetic strength from Him. Okay energy, flame on!
