Name:

As a 25+ year homeschooling vet, post-cancer, math prof, mother of five, master's track and field athlete, and certificated private pilot, I have a lot to share about what God has done in my life. In 2000 I began writing devotions as something to try when it seemed like accoustic pianists were becoming an endangered species at church. I have since found great blessings from writing and sharing. God is good.

The Image of God, Part 1

First published August 31, 2009

Genesis 1:27
And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them.

When I was a kid my school teacher had a class activity for the students to commemorate George Washington’s birthday. Each child cut out a silhouette of George on black construction paper. We pasted the silhouette onto white paper for higher contrast. As an added bonus, each child was able to have a silhouette made of him. We each sat in a chair with a bright light shining at us. Our shadows shown on a light-weight sheet of paper. The teacher traced out our silhouette, and then we cut out the image and pasted it onto another white background.

The silhouettes, mine and George’s, have commonalities. They were images of the likeness of the subjects, and they would not give the full detail of what we looked like. But anyone of us could tell that George’s silhouette belonged to him. Even as young as we were, my classmates and I had seen his image on quarters and one dollar bills, but there were many things missing. Among others, the eye color, the bone structure, and age lines were not there.

Today’s verse is one of the great climaxes in Genesis 1. Placed at the beginning of the compilation of 66 books of the Bible, we see that God wants us to know he made man in his image. We should all feel very special by this fact. It is important for our spiritual focus to realize daily that we are from God the Father. Yes, we are tempted by sin, but one of our greatest spiritual energy boosters is to raise our head high as a child of God.

Try standing at a mirror and say pointing to your image, “Smile, you are made in God’s image!” Did you do it with conviction? Say it again! Now, say this to someone you meet today, and share the exhilaration of knowing just how special Man is!

O Wonderful Father Above, I am amazed at the marvelous creation around me. I feel so special in knowing that of all you made, I was created in your image. Thank you for this gift of life and help me to share your truth. I praise you in Jesus’ name, amen.

It’s Too Cinchy!

First published August 1, 2009

2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth.

My husband’s mother, Sue tells this story about when Jeff was a schoolboy. Jeff was a very quick thinker and could comprehend concepts well. And once he thought he had mastered something, he was done. Here then, lies the clash with the teacher. In second grade Jeff’s teacher gave the students a page of subtraction facts to complete. After the prescribed amount of time was finished, the students turned in their papers. Soon after, the teacher asked Jeff why he didn’t do any of the problems. “It’s too cinchy!” replied Jeff. Stunning the teacher with his insubordinate remark, Jeff got into further trouble, having to answer to his mother and the principal!

As a Christian it is sometimes hard to study the “cinchy” stuff. Yeah, yeah, we think. We’ve seen this a zillion times. We even know all the acronyms: ASAP, BIBLE, CIA, FROG, GUM, HOPE, JOY, JUICE, PUSH, PTL! SOAP, TGIF, TIGER, WWJD, borrowed from http://www.heart4home.net/christian_acronyms.htm. And we know all the “important” Christian stuff: John 3:16, “Jesus wept,” The Ten Commandments, The Lord’s Prayer, The Beatitudes, Paul’s Conversion, Noah’s Ark, Samson and Delilah, and more.

Now that we are firmly cemented in our comfort zone, answer this: was your latest sin or blunder due to over-looking or ignoring one of those “cinchy” basic Biblical truths? Uh-huh. Just today I stumbled and ignored a simple, practiced, and supposedly mastered Fruit of the Spirit: kindness. Yes, I was down-right mean, not thinking about the words and the attitude I was portraying. My justification was truthful, but I was not truthful in love. We ought to not over look being re-taught those “cinchy” basic Biblical truths. Grasp them! Use them! Our spiritual foundation rides on this. Let’s eagerly seek to welcome the simple lessons and grow in righteousness and truth.

Dear Jesus, I petition to God the Father through you, please help me to not overlook the basic Biblical foundations. They are many and I frequently stumble. Give me wisdom to think twice and grasp the “cinchy” stuff as being important. In your name I pray, amen.

Senior Games 8/9/09

On my second day, my cheering section included my brother and his friend, two of my sisters, and my brother-in-law.

Here is a video clip by Jeff of my 2nd place jump.
I had a great time in the Bay Area and am looking forward to the 2010 USATF National Championships in Sacramento!

Senior Games 8/8/09

Well, I didn't reach my 10 meter goal in the shot put, but 9.89m (32 feet, 5 inches) was good enough for 2nd place!

Here's the video clip (courtesy of Jeff) of my last put and the official calling my best effort.
